Your point around too big or small is a really interesting one and I wonder if there would ever be a way to right size a council. Although that's a doubt because of the party politics involved. Obviously there's the argument that because a number of affluent areas fall outside of GCC tax remit, but people living there are likely to work and socialise in Glasgow, it creates a disconnect in money coming into the council and what it has to spend within the city boundaries in terms of business and leisure usage. On the other hand, I vaguely remember Strathy council being thought of as completely inefficient and too big to effectively manage.

So what would work? Obviously the concern of bringing in a wider Glasgow Metropolitan Area council would be that those who have their own council now would feel they would be neglected by one major council that would likely focus on the City Centre. And the current issues with GCC and the bureaucracy and inefficiency don't paint a great picture of it managing even more of an area. And really, is there any motivation within the political circles to change anything, seems like it's an attitude of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it, and don't fix it if it's broke either" from all levels so will anything ever really be done?
