I used to live in London for five and a half years up until 2015 and during that time I used the train every time to come up and down. The four and a half hours flys by, it's a pleasant journey, and you arrive straight into Central and Euston and it's a doddle to get to wherever you are going from there. There is also a lot to be said for being able to turn up at the train station 30 mins before you leave as opposed to the two hours at the airport.

Obviously depends on your circumstances, but the earlier trains going both ways were always great. There was one just after 6am to London and the 5:39am from Euston, always relatively quiet, would pick up a little bit at Preston but plenty of space.
