The situation with US healthcare is *way* worse than the cost alone.
The insurance companies play all kinds of games including a jolly wheeze called "Retrospective Denial" where after telling you they will pay for treatment they don't, and several days after you are home again you foot 100% of the bill. I personally know somebody who was on the hook for over $100k after a second surgery following a paralyzing car wreck.

Unfortunately I have quite a bit of experience with the US healthcare system.

This is what happens when you introduce a profit motive to healthcare.
