Definitely not an oxymoron! Contemporary classical is just classical music written by present day composers (many people also would include any 'living memory' composers that might have passed away already). These days lines get sometimes blurred between classical and non-classical music, especially when talking about instrumental only pieces (so I'd say Nils Frahm lives somewhere in that blurry area). There's lots of little things which are different in classical and non-classical music with tonnes of exceptions too, but I'd say that most generally it's about what tradition it comes from - which for classical is farily formal written "high art" music tradition, while a lot of non-classical comes from various folk traditions. Obviously I'm oversimplifying and ignoring a lot of nuance here.

This is a good video with some neat examples! https://youtu.be/OAg-OeCYjKs
