As others have said, replacing a screen is simple; carefully pop the bezel, few screws, careful pop the cable (might need to get under the keyboard, depends), bin old, add new, reverse earlier steps. Cost? Varies, but £30-100.

You could get your "reliable source" to state it's an internal crack (although it sounds more like a loose cable to me) in a letter and see if that does the trick.
