You might be able to swing a better deal on finance as the dealer often gets a kickback. Depends on what's on offer of course.

There's other tricks like buying towards the end of the month when the salesperson wants to hit their numbers.

The bigger dealers are just playing a numbers game, you don't matter and IME all the mechanics are shit.

If you already have a car, ask you mechanic where they'd go or if they know a car going for your budget.

Scout about on autotrader.co.uk and use honestjohn.co.uk to read-up on common faults for a given model & year.

Kia (we have a Cee'd) seem surprisingly well put together and don't cost the Earth, but maybe we just got lucky.
