Bus driver pulls up, the old 66, I jump from the bench to the bus door, I feel like fucking spider-man. Turn to the guy and my fare drops from my hand and into the drink. Bus driver tells me to get off. I ask if he’d let me stay on until the next stop at least, you know, since I don’t have a kayak on me. He says no.
An old woman comes down and pops the 50p for my fare home in the wee slot. I’m so thankful, but she just stands next to the driver, braced against all the handrails, basically ripping the bus driver a new arsehole for being a heartless cunt. She keeps at it from Balgray all the way to the gates of the Botanics.
I think it was the first time I ever heard a pensioner swear in earnest. It was utterly amazing. |
