When I worked in a supermarket the official documentation said EU driver licences because they are a standard format and easy to identify forgeries. Whereas staff couldn’t spot foreign fakes. I always advised getting a Pass logo ID card or using your passport in case you come across a stickler. You’re told the shop could be fined over £50,000 and a £1500 on the spot fine for the cashier if you are caught selling liquor to somebody underage. So the person was probably just being careful. Not deliberately trying to annoy you.
