| Comment | People who lived through such times went out of their way to shelter their children from the suffering and hardship. If all your male relatives went off to war and never came back, you’d try your best to teach your children that war is bad. That’s a big part of why France did so poorly in WW2. A fifth of their male population was wiped out in WW1, and in the 20-odd years after, the survivors made damn sure to never indulge in it again. |
