We need a system that isn't built on the idea of perpetual economic growth. Market competition dictates that actors will attempt to reduce their costs to increase their returns. This includes exportation of labour to third world countries, using cheaper and more environmentally destructive raw materials and more energy intensive processes.

We have so much potential to development responsible processes but markets do not respond to the most environmentally friendly options, they respond to the most profitable. It's more profitable to sell a car to every commuter than to run a reliable bus service for example. The incentive for private capital to become environmentally friendly and risk jeopardising their profits is simply not there. Actor A will not change because actor B won't either, and therefore A will be priced out by B's lower overheads and subsequent lower consumer pricing.
