With modern tech you could even have them go off-grid. Run power lines along all the main arterial routes, which power the buses and charge their batteries as they go. When they need to go off-route to service residential areas, they can leave the cable network and drive on battery power. Clean, reliable and flexible transportation without having to string power guides absolutley everywhere you want a bus to go.

I've seen Germany are trialling something similar for lorries too, have one lane of the motorway electrified with overhead cables, lorries have constant power along the autobahn and then switch to batteries for the final mile or so to the depot.
