Libraries are good, and there are 3 Cafes in a row on Skirving Street (Zola, hug, bean scene) where my SO goes to work for an hour or so at a time - usually Hug because then he can take the dog. The Mediterranean is nice too, and D'nisi (both Kilmarnock Road). Since all of these are a bit small and I feel guilty about keeping consumption levels low, I go to pubs, they tend to be emptier during the day, and having a pint often helps to concentrate.
