In my close a few people use open fires and a few more have burners. I think In Glasgow you’re meant to use smokeless fuel in a burner but plenty of people still use open fires also, technically illegally.
As mentioned, get the flue lined - got quoted 800 quid for ours. At that point you can either risk the open fire or buy a burner..
