| Comment | You would tap on with the driver then tap off at the unit on the pole. If the software and hardware works well together it should speed up boarding and not cause much of a delay for alighting passengers. Quick tap, beep and go.
If you don’t tap off then the system will assume you have travelled to the end of the route and charge the full single fare for that service (up to the cap) so its in the users best interest to tap out and make sure they are only charged for the journey they actually made.
Here is an example of the TFL system. It shows how quick it should work (in theory). Again on London buses its a flat fare so no tap out requirement but you do tap out on the Underground.
