That's not always the case. If you introduce them properly (and I don't mean saying "Cat, this is other cat. Shake paws and be friends") they should get on OK.
I mean keeping them apart in separate rooms at first and very gradually letting them get used to each other a little bit at a time.
Well worth the effort if you're prepared to put in the time.
