For things like ancestry.com cross reference everything. It has lots of good info, but people can add their own info so there are mistakes they have made about who certain people are. I personally haven’t used it. I am passing info on from my mum who has gone heavy with the family tree. As there was a tradition of naming a first son after their paternal grandfather in Scotland, you get multiple generations through families with the same name recurring (for examples there are multiple James Davidsons and Mary Davidsons in one arm of my family. The record chain she found was 7 in a row). It means that some people make a mistake and attribute one person as being someone in the family but when you start cross checking from multiple sources, it doesn’t really add up as you find someone having a child at age 10 or 56 years old. She said it is a really good resource to add to the arsenal of resources, but not to rely only on one source
