It wasn't a random decision to smash the M8 through the City Centre, the construction coincided with plans to demolish slums throughout the city in Townhead, Anderston, Cowcaddens and Kinning Park. (Destroying Charing Cross was criminal, sadly).

The plans were first suggested in the 1945 Bruce Report, an investigation into ways to regenerate the city after the Second World War.

The Bruce Report envisioned a whole system of motorways in the city centre, with buildings and housing divided up into new zones.

The cunts originally wanted to demolish more, including Central Station, Kelvingrove Art Gallery, Glasgow School of Art, and the City Chambers.

These plans were knocked back – but a scaled down version of the Bruce Report system did go ahead. Working class families were forced to leave, irreparable damage was caused to communities, and the cities population halved over the next couple of decades. We can now get across the city rapidly by car though..

I read more than a few bribes went to city councillors from demolition contractors at the time, but fucked if I can find the article.
