Edinburgh also didn't have anywhere near the same amount of heavy industry as Glasgow, and the area around the Royal Mile was fully built up much earlier. Glasgow didn't really take off (beyond the cathedral and old University site) until the tobacco trade - it was better placed than Edinburgh to trade with North America.
