Glasgow was quite early in building urban motorways (compared to other cities in the UK) so there was nothing much else in the country to refer to in terms of design.

LA was an obvious candidate for comparison. Some parts of I5 that pass through Downtown do feel weirdly reminicent of the M8.

Road design has moved on in the years since, and even if the M8 were being built on the same route today it would look very different. The M74 is an interesting comparison, with much more space between junctions and better traffic flow overall. The original plans for it had a much more intense layout with numerous slip roads. It's arguable that the city got a much better road by waiting 50 years to build it.
