I kinda think it went a slightly opposite way, think we had the progression of St Enochs, Buccannan Galleries, Braehead then Silverburn. all these mall like shopping centres were the begining of the end of the high st and seem to have such a finite lifespan, I was in Breahead for the first time in over a decade recently and it's so dead.
