| Comment | Internet and out of town shopping has killed the high street. That's not going to change. The only shops/organisations that could replace the big chains are small independent shops as well as arts and entertainment venues. None of them can afford the astronomical rent and rates and believe me, the landlords wont budge. I've had countless meetings and sat in endless (expensive) consultations as a 'stake holder'. They want prime retail rents or get fucked. City property and Ryden etc. would happily let a listed a property crumble or mysteriously burn down than let it out cheap as they think it sets a bad precedent for their fantasy belief that big chains will somehow return |
