The scam relies on the fact that when you call a BT landline then only the person that initiates the call can actually terminate the call within a certain time frame. It used to be several minutes but it’s been massively reduced recently thankfully. Basically they ask you to hang up and then immediately call 999 to verify the whole thing, but they’re still actually on the line just playing the sound of a dialling tone down the line and so you’re not actually “calling” anyone back. They’re still there. They then pretend to be the police again. Quite a smart scam to be fair, can see how people are falling for it. |
