It blew my mind recently when I saw a clip from some documentary on recycling, showing the sheer amount of stuff that can't be recycled at depots because it's been 'contaminated'. A lot of it just ends up in landfill if so.

I mean, it made me realise that pretty much 95% of everything I was putting in the recycling up to then had been 'contaminating' the bin contents. Whether dirty, or just not totally the right thing to be putting in there (soft cellophane lids and wrappers on bottles for example - elements of otherwise recyclable packaging that just can't be recycled yet).

So many people, probably most (including me btw!) don't realise this.

I notice the council doing a bit more proactive education on it now. But yeah, as you say, this is very probably the reason OP's bins have not been collected.

If the council workers very clearly see material in the recycling bin that isn't compliant... they'll leave it. Obviously, that doesn't mean all other bins are totally compliant. But they're not going to collect something that has non compliant stuff on the top.
