The current trains are only driven manually when they're on their way in or out of the depot. When they're in service, it's totally automatic.

The driver's job is to open and close the doors, then push a button that makes the train drive itself to the next stop. They're mostly there in case there's an emergency.

Driving the trains manually is difficult because the stations are barely longer than the trains - you have to stop exactly in the right place. A lot of the stations are on a hump which makes it even more difficult to time your braking perfectly.
