Yeah it's real, down south they have front facing cameras with a purple filter that allegedly stops the glare from possibly temporarily blinding you but we don't up here. I've burst cameras a couple of times because you don't get a warning on the opposite side of the road and never heard anything about it. You don't have the distance markings for them to prove how fast you were travelling on the opposite side of the road usually either, unless it's a narrow road and they think people might move across to avoid detection when they're speeding.
