Yeah I'm one of those assholes. The cone was only good when the council didn't want it up. It was good 15 years ago when I climbed up and put one there. It was good when it actually symbolised something.

The moment the council stopped removing it, the whole save the cone campaign etc, it became meta. It became "cool". Nowadays it's been completely commodified, divorced from its original F U to authority, to the council and Wellington himself. A tourist attraction. A design to be sold on mugs, tea towels and facemaks. Co-opted by giant corporations piggy backing on a hollowed out brand of "rebellion".

It's an embarrassing narrative that Glaswegians can tell about themselves. A corporatised, hollow narrative, i.e the perfect description of current cultural identity.

I don't care how unpopular an opinion this is. It's amusing how attached people are to it though, or what the idea of it represents.
