As it sounds like you will be unable to stay at your current address they might take you on as homeless right away and make section 5 referrals to housing associations in 2 areas of your choice. This basically puts you on the housing lists as a priority.
They will also offer temporary accommodation, however, if you can stay where you are for the time being I would advise you do so.
