I've never read the book and barely know anything about it. What I did like about it was that the stakes felt high almost immediately, there was a wee synopsis at the start and then it was straight into it.

I often feel with a lot of these huge, big budget movies, they are painfully slow and are mainly an exercise in self indulgence for three hours, where as this went straight for it from the get go which I enjoyed. As you mentioned, that may have been at the expense of some details from the book but it worked for me.
