This is a very subjective question. If you just want the cheapest, go on Compare the Market and answer the questions honestly, then pick the lowest.

Have you got a bike? Have you got a few bits of expensive jewellery? Do you lose stuff a lot? A bog standard policy will cover what is in your house, up to a maximum amount, and some things like bikes and jewellery will have single article limits - anything over a certain value needs to be specified. Some basic policies exclude accidental damage and loss away from your premises, so if you lose your watch when you’re out, it’s not covered.

If you keep you bike locked up in the close, they might not cover it if it is nicked, as it’s not in your flat.

Excesses vary massively, so read the small print.

Also, you mentioned damp/rot and a roof repair - wear and tear, and damage down to lack of maintenance are not covered by insurance.

If you don’t feel confident buying insurance yourself, go to a broker. They can check the whole of the market for you and give you advice and quotes based on your circumstances. If you buy direct, yourself, an insurance company can only advise you on their own products, and not on the best option for you.

It is worth doing a quick walk round and adding up what it would cost to replace everything in each room (it doesn’t need to be exact, just roughly) I guarantee you’ll be surprised - then this is a good starting point for what limit you might want to consider. Also take photos of any items and any new purchases over, say £100. Easier to keep than receipts and helps if you have to claim (hope you don’t). If you imagine you picked up your house and tipped it upside down, anything that fell out is contents insurance. Anything that is fixed is covered by buildings.
