Those lines were designed and built as heavy rail and thus provide the opportunity for re routing of freight and high speed when main lines are down. The Cathcart line was also recently re-signalled at great expense and it's also pretty frequent tbh. I'd say leave the existing lines and by all means build a metro like the one in Tyne and Weir or DLR, extend the Underground within reason, De privatise and decarbonise the bus system, ensure they all actually link with each other, with one ticket. While we're here, they all need to run 24/7 to facilitate the nighttime cultural economy. In terms of active travel, we need segregated cycle provision on every major road. We're not going to reduce car use until there's an affordable and convenient public transport system. PS none of this lovely stuff will happen with Westminster in charge!
