For the vet school you have Anniesland/Temple which is a 15/20 minute walk. Quite a lot of new-ish houses in those areas now so good for families and there's also a fair few American students in the area too. Don't know your budget but they are pretty reasonably priced for both renting and purchasing. Kelvindale, Bearsden, Westerton are all nice areas but very expensive. Milngavie and Jordanhill are even more expensive. Really depends on your budget.

Areas in the Southside like Cathcart, Giffnock etc are good for families yeah but public transport from there to the vet school will take about an hour as you're changing trains and walking for a bit, so it will quickly become a pain in the arse. You can of course drive (about 30 mins) but the main road that takes you up to the vet school is constantly busy. You'll need a parking permit for the vet school and students need to have a good reason for one, such as there being no public transport alternatives. I'd choose to get there by walking/cycling.
