Comment | Govanhill has been the starting point for a great many people arriving in the city for over a hundred years. Starting with people driven off the land by the Highland clearances, as well as folk from the UK's ex colonies, invited to set up life in Glasgow, fleeing war and famine. Freedom of movement throughout the EU brought more people looking for a better life away from poverty and persecution. They're all Glaswegians now. There is, however, no denying that the place is pretty grubby and crime ridden, although not nearly as bad as other places. If you want to know why it's like that, it's because of over crowding and poverty, exploitative landlords and a general, couldn't-care-less attitude from GCC for many decades. (The current mob in city chambers are trying to do something and they got rid of a lot of the bad landlords) The reason for the price hike is equally complex, a lot of younger folk moving there because it was cheap but also recently a lot of those folk actually being from wealth. I know at least 5 people who's rich parents bought a pad for them in the G Hill outright, in cash. I also know folk who grew up there not able to afford to rent. The ideas of diversity and that awful word 'vibrancy' are indeed being used by estate agents and now property developers. It's gentrification (not regeneration). It's also part of a wider UK trend in house prices plus a bunch of other factors that I'm leaving out for brevity |
