I'm pretty sure I was taught to give pedestrians priority but my memory is hazy; I learned to drive over 25 years ago. That's probably part of the problem, we're not all new drivers and bad habits can set in.

I think the new rules are great. As a pedestrian it can be really tricky to gauge whether a car is likely to turn at a junction of a road you're crossing (indicators are only one clue you might want to look for, others are knowing the road layout/markings the car is driving on which can reduce the need drivers feel to signal, trying to see where the driver is looking, why they aren't changing lane, watching for the angle of wheels of cars waiting at t-junctions) and it must be even worse for non drivers and children. There are too many cars on the road now for it to be feasible to teach children to wait until there are no cars coming, like they did in my day.
