Curious why you want to avoid tourist traps as a newcomer yourself- a lot of things that would be classed as “touristy” are actually great introductions to the city and its rich history, culture and personality- eg Barras Market, Kelvingrove Museum, glasgow cathedral - places I visited when I first arrived as a student that I still love today. I think instead of approaching the city as a check list of places to avoid and places that are cool, come and get stuck into all of it for yourself, the good the bad and the ugly, and you will have a brilliant, authentic experience of being a student here. I promise, have done it myself!
