I genuinley believe that this is due to a 'They do it so so will I' type attitude. it's very rare I see all (if any) cyclists stay in that box at a red light, with a lot choosing to go when they feel it's clear. Same with popping onto the pavement at a red light to cross with the pedestrians etc. There's no mutual respect and I doubt there ever will be.
