It wasn't entirely serious. You and I both know there is only one real reason why someone would become a landlord in a situation like this, and that is profit.
You can dress it up however you want but profit is the bottom line. To me, the fact OP mentions that he may have the opportunity to buy before it goes to market all but confirms he spots an opportunity to make money here.
