There's a host of issues with that though.

How do you fairly assign free accommodation when it will be of varying size, quality and location?

How do you decide who is eligible and needs it? Taking as an example young adults, if accommodation no longer has cost, then the new barrier for moving out from their parents house is now whether the state decides that they are eligible.

How do you decide who gets accommodation where? Does accommodation in town centres get prioritised to those who work locally, to families, to students who study nearby, or to those already living there? Is it fair reassign retirees from their homes to other housing to allow workers to live nearer their workplaces? Or do you force those workers to commute further even though the retirees have no material benefit to staying?

This only works if you have limitless accommodation of roughly equal quality in all of the places that it is needed. Our current situation with landlords is bad, but free housing to all isn't feasible, it's a logistical and ethical nightmare.
