Now before I get criticised further here, I am obviously speaking in generalities. Not everything I say applies to everybody. And if you are the type of person who wants to eat healthy and participate in sport then obviously those things are available to you in Glasgow.

However... there are problems in Glasgow with unhealthy living. The vast majority of people do not exercise regularly. Most people are not into sport, or if they are their participation extends no further than watching. Diets are not healthy. Obesity is a problem. People drink way too much alcohol. In Glasgow, alcohol consumption is so prevalent that the average person is a binge drinker without realising it. It is considered pretty normal to get drunk twice a week or more, or to drink a whole bottle of wine while sitting in your house watching tv on a weeknight.

In terms of how most people spend their leisure time, it mostly consists of sitting in the house watching tv after work +/- alcohol. The weekends might include a night in a pub or club getting drunk. There are sporting facilities available, but these are generally under-utilised. The weather doesn’t help in this regard, as it rains so often and the weather is so changeable that it is very difficult to plan any outdoor activities or day trips more than a day or two in advance. In the winter, it’s dark from 4pm onwards. So if you work Mon-Fri 9-5 it is actually very feasible that you don’t see the sun between Sunday afternoon and the following Saturday morning. Most people in Scotland will be vitamin D deficient by the end of winter for this very reason. This leads to seasonal affective disorder in some.
