It is possible. But you'll never be 'successful' (meaning you'll never own dozens of flats and drive a ferarri) But if you just have one or two properties and use the rents to pay the mortgage and supplement you income, you *can* charge fair rent and treat tenants as human-beings.

You have to be very careful who you rent to though, as there are plenty of scumbags out there who know how to abuse tenants-rights and will basically squat in your flat for nothing while you have to somehow pay the mortgage. (and No. No-matter how tough you think you are, you're not going to be able to eject 3 big shady russian guys and their friends from your flat.)

I did odd-jobs for a landlord for years, and he eventually had to chuck it cos he was 'too nice' and scumbags just took the cunt till he couldn't take the losses anymore.
