I work in property management for mostly commercial properties and most of the conversations we have been having are around this exact thing. Over the next 5-10 years the retail spaces in city centres will gradually disappear as has already been happening. Covid has accelerated this because now with so many companies seeing that work from home is an option they will be looking to see out their lease and close offices. These spaces will need to be changed in to something as landlords aren’t exactly going to give up their profits, so the natural thing is residential. I think in the long run it will only benefit all the pubs, clubs and restaurants in the city centre if there is a greater population living on their doorstep as they are more likely to use them.
