Tbh the quote sounds about right. I had a timing belt go once and it was chaos. Three garages said it was a write off. My brother took it on as hobby and sorted it over 2-3 months with my dad and then he drove it a further two years. Still probsbly cost them near a grand in parts.

Unless you're looking for a new hobby you'd be better with another car. A car of 14 years is only going to get more costly to run - don't let sunken cost fallacy take hold.

Also, unless its because you're only looking at ford's it shouldn't be costing you 17k for a 6-7 year old car?!
