Look at areas on the Scotrail Suburban rail network and properties within walking distance of the local train stations.

Milngavie was recommended in another comment, decent area to live, good town centre, train station is probably a 15 - 20 min walk from the areas where most of the denser housing is. Local bus 60A.

Bearsden - highly sought after, higher prices but one of the most desired areas in Scotland, with property prices to match. Same rail line as Milngavie. Local bus 60A or 17 depending on which part.

Clydebank is area dependent. Can probably get good rents. There are good parts, and some areas you may wish to avoid. Excellent transport links through the town though, servers by multiple train stations (Dalmuir, Clydebank, Singer, Drumry) and good bus services. Express buses from the town centre too.

Old Kilpatrick (the village of) neighbouring Clydebank is quieter than Clydebank. Properties never last long on the market here.

Dumbarton is becoming very popular now. Loch Lomond on your door step. New build properties springing up and popular developments throughout the town. There are some areas not so desirable. The town centre is a bit run down, but most of the locals shop in the nearby retail park.

Other areas you may wish to consider: Giffnock, Newton Mearns, East Kilbride, Robroyston, Paisley, Hamilton.

Most towns surrounding Glasgow have good transport links. Properties in the desirable areas are being snapped up within days.
