Comment | In days gone by, when starting the 2nd job you might have been initially placed on the higher rate tax code as a default, as it's better to overpay tax and get a rebate than underpay and get a shock bill, but the end result would be the same. The number of jobs you have is irrelevant, income tax is purely calculated on income.
Nowadays PAYE is set up to deal with all of this pretty quickly and efficiently so no real need for temporary tax codes if the company has things in order.
I think it can become a bit more complex if you're working and receiving benefits, though (which is one of the things Universal Credit is meant to solve). |
