In my experience, I have to agree. Whilst these charities might be beneficial to some, I’ve personally never seen any evidence of how they’ve helped or supported folk with complex mental health problems in the long term. This is something I’ve also thought about before and discussed with others in the past.

As an adult who also has ADHD *et al*., I can empathise with your situation, i.e. it’s shite. As you’ll well know ADHD’s a chronic condition, and although medication can be extremely effective, it’s not a silver bullet. What I think is lacking in this area is post-diagnostic support, especially for people who have been diagnosed as adults and might not have had the opportunity to develop the skills necessary to manage the condition effectively. However, mental health support in this country is severely underfunded, and in the words of my psychiatrist they’re basically just ‘firefighting’ at the moment.

There’s a Glasgow ADHD support group that I’ve found useful in the past. Although I’ve not been for a while myself, I did find some comfort in chatting with other folk who I could relate to and share experiences with.
