This is more often than not a more middle class sort of thing in Scotland. Even if they have room, most folk don’t have a dining table, and food is generally eaten in front of the TV. The culture in the UK regarding food is not like it is in Italy. Most people are terrible at cooking and we don’t have the same high quality traditional meals. Their idea of a basic ragu is a jar of Dolmio.

Eating at the dining table is often a way of conditioning kids to learn table manners that have their roots in the English aristocracy, so again it’s generally only aspirational middle class types who do this.
