Wow, I hadn't really thought about it, but there are so many houses here which just don't accommodate a dining table. I'm in a large tenement which has a big recess in the kitchen (there would originally have been a bed there) which is big enough for a dining table and chairs. I mostly eat on my lap in the living room though!
