"Treat every junction as a zebra crossing" is a great, simple way of explaining it.

Another way I like to think of it is that drivers should treat the pavement as another lane of traffic.

You wouldn't just cut across a busy lane of moving vehicles to make a 90 degree turn, so why is it alright to do that to pedestrians?
