This has happened because with the price cap, they haven't been able to pass on their extra costs. Some firms had lots of longer term hedges against natural gas price rises for the time being, those that didn't have gone bankrupt.

Now the price cap is adjusting, so they will be able to pass on *some* of their increased costs.

If the firms were nationalised, the multi billion pound losses they've been running would still have to come from somewhere.
