Don't say "they know no history" when you've totally fucked up who William was. The King you're probably talking about is James VII who was not the first Scottish King of Britain. William was married to (Catholic) James's (Protestant) daughter Mary and was invited to take the throne by the British Parliament when James was exiled.
James attempted to retake the throne at the Battle of the Boyne but was defeated by the King's forces. |
