Comment | Unfortunately “road tax” or vehicle excise & fuel duty are not ring fenced for road spending and haven’t been since I believe pre-WW2.
The funds raised by vehicle based duties go into the general spending pot, only a fraction of the money raised is reinvested into road traffic infrastructure. Last I recall UK wide around £30b is raised from vehicle & fuel duty & £2.5b is spent on road maintenance & development.
Can’t name an easy way of fixing that, vote out the current omnishambles of local & national governments in favour of ones who pledge funding for infrastructure spending. There’s campaign groups such as FairFuel UK who lobby for fairer taxation & spending, but it’s like banging your head off a brick wall at this point. |
